Everyone seems to know Arthur Conan Doyle’s Great Detective – he is archetypal, beloved, canonical. In this talk I discuss whether it is in fact possible to know Sherlock Holmes and posit that the very features that popularised him, i.e. seriality, transmediality, and palimpsestousness, have diluted and dismantled the character, reducing him to a few omnipresent signifiers.
